What is translation?
Cambridge Dictionary defines it as:
“the activity or process of changing the words of one language into the words in another language that have the same meaning”.
Translation is the conversion of written text from one language to another. The original language of the document is commonly referred to as the source language, whereas the language in which the document needs to be translated is referred to as target language, or the receptor language. The goal of a translation, as every reputable translation company would agree, is to convey the original meaning, tone and objective of a message in the most authentic and accurate way possible, while taking into consideration geographical and cultural differences between the target and the source languages. Humans have been translating written words for many years, long before the concept of a translation company as we know it today came along. The first known translations are those of the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh into Asian languages from the second millennium BC. Later Buddhist monks translated Indian sutras into Chinese and Roman poets adapted Greek texts.
Along the centuries, translations continued to bea necessary tool across the continents and as its relevance grew, a new industry was born. This was due to various reasons, among which the fact that the English language, in spite being the most spoken language in the world, is not understood and/or spoken by everybody. Companies and businesses would be very limited if they were to operate solely in English. Most of the people prefer to communicate in their native language and therefore, translation allows people to communicate more effectively. When it comes to global economy, geography is no longer an issue and translation facilitates it by breaking down language barriers. Developing countries and their languages are steadily emerging within the global economy and in the future, English may not be the most spoken language in the world economy. Translation is thus extremely important in the business world because it allows to reach a larger audience. It helps companies expand their brand, purpose and goals to anyone around the world. One of the roles of a translation company, therefore, is to help companies reach places and markets they never thought existed before. Moreover, specialised and professional fields often require the services of a professional translation company to communicate their message and reach their clients.
Translation is indispensable in the sharing and spreading of information, knowledge and ideas throughout the world. It is the only means by which people can learn about different works that were originally written in a different language and expand their knowledge of the world and empower their growth.Receiving information in the language they have known the longest is essential for effective communication and to avoid miscommunication. This is a very important concept at the basis of any translator or translation company.
Finally, a translation company needs to ensure its team of collaborators possessesextensive language skills in both the source and the target languages.
